Similar in appearance to its predecessor, the second-generation SE offers cost savings of $30 while introducing notable improvements under the hood. The inclusion of a faster processor, a new motion sensor enabling Crash Detection, and significantly extended battery life make the SE a compelling choice.
However, it’s essential to note that the SE does miss out on some luxuries found in the Series 8 model, which starts at $399. Notably, the SE lacks an always-on display and essential sensors for blood oxygen (SpO2), electrocardiogram (ECG), and body temperature readings.
For users seeking a bigger screen that remains on throughout the day and advanced health-tracking features, the Series 8 emerges as the top pick among Apple Watch buyers. The Apple Watch Series 8 offers a more comprehensive and sophisticated set of health tools. However, for those on a budget, the second-gen SE presents a commendable alternative, ensuring you stay active, connected, and secure without breaking the bank.

My short experience using Apple Watch SE
Having used the Smartwatch SE for several months, I can confidently say that it has become an indispensable part of my daily life. From managing notifications and staying on top of my fitness goals to effortlessly controlling smart home devices, the SE has exceeded my expectations in terms of convenience and practicality.
Setting up the review unit with the loaned iPhone 14 from Apple for testing was a seamless process. If you’re transitioning from a different Apple Watch, the setup prompts will inquire whether you wish to replicate your apps and settings on the new device. While waiting for the synchronization to complete, the app will prompt you to create a password for your Apple Watch, a crucial step, especially if you use it for period tracking. Additionally, the setup will require you to provide basic health information such as birth date, sex, height, and weight. If applicable, you can also set up cellular capabilities during this process and easily add a card to Apple Pay.
Design and Build Quality Apple Watch SE:
The SE differs from the signature sleek and modern design that Apple is known for. The rectangular Retina display with rounded corners delivers crisp visuals and easy readability. The build quality is commendable, with robust materials ensuring durability and longevity. Though it may lack the Always-On display feature, the overall design and aesthetics make it a stylish accessory for any occasion.
The recently introduced Watch SE is available in 40mm (small/medium) and 44mm (large). It differs from a 100% recycled aluminum case, which comes in three elegant color options: Midnight (a deep navy blue), Silver, or Starlight (champagne). On the other hand, the Series 8 is slightly larger, with 41mm or 45mm variants, and offers a choice between aluminum and stainless steel cases.
For this review, Apple loaned me the 40mm cellular Watch SE in Starlight with a matching Sport Band. The included Sport Band is made of comfortable, waterproof fluoroelastomer and features a pin-and-tuck closure. Apple includes a USB-C charging cable in the box, but you’ll need to provide your own power adapter.
The Watch SE priced $150 less than the Series 8, comes with a few compromises to achieve its lower cost. Most notably, it lacks an always-on display mode, which may be a deal breaker for some users. The OLED Retina display, which differs from the Series 8, boasts vibrant colors and easy readability both indoors and outdoors, with a peak brightness of 1,000 nits. However, with the Watch SE, you’ll need to move your wrist towards you or press a button to activate the display. In the wrist-down position, the SE’s display turns off, preventing you from simply glancing down to discreetly check the time. Thankfully, the SE’s display quickly lights up when you raise or turn your wrist, which has lessened the impact of not having an always-on display for me personally.
